FTKEK Achieves Gold Rating in MaPTeP 2025 Audit

FTKEK has achieved another proud milestone in energy management and sustainability by receiving the Gold Rating in MaPTeP 2025. 

On 23 September 2025, the UTeM Energy Management Committee conducted the MaPTeP 2025 Internal Audit (Energy Management System Assessment Matrix) at FTKEK. The FTKEK Energy and Sustainability Management Committee worked closely with the audit team to ensure a smooth and well-coordinated assessment.

 Throughout 2025, FTKEK strengthened its energy-saving culture through staff briefings, student awareness programmes, sustainability quizzes and engagement with stakeholders. Energy-saving messages were also shared through WhatsApp, Facebook, email and the faculty website. A total of 77.1% of FTKEK staff participated in energy awareness activities, exceeding the 75% participation target.

These continuous efforts contributed to FTKEK being awarded the MaPTeP 2025 Gold Rating, officially presented during a university ceremony on 10 February 2026.

This recognition reflects the strong teamwork and commitment of the FTKEK Energy and Sustainability Management Committee, staff, students and stakeholders.

FTKEK Achieves Gold Rating in MaPTeP 2024 Audit

The UTeM Energy Management Committee conducted the MaPTeP 2024 internal audit (Energy Management System Assessment Matrix) at FTKEK on 24 September 2024. The FTKEK Energy and Sustainability Management Committee welcomed the auditors and facilitated the process smoothly.

As a result of the audit, FTKEK proudly achieved the Gold Rating, which was officially presented during a university ceremony held on 9 May 2025. Congratulations to all committee members for their dedication, and heartfelt appreciation to all staff for their continuous support of the committee’s initiatives and recommendations.

Room Data Survey Conducted at FTKEK

On 29 April 2026, a Room Data Survey (RDS) was conducted at the Faculty of Electronics and Computer Technology and Engineering (FTKEK) to evaluate the indoor environmental conditions of the faculty building. The RDS Audit Team carried out on-site measurements at selected rooms and areas across different floors. Four key parameters were measured: room temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide (CO₂) concentration, and illuminance level. The collected data were analysed to assess occupants’ comfort and identify areas for improvement in indoor environmental quality.

A total of 39 rooms were assessed. The survey found that 90% of the rooms recorded relative humidity within the recommended range, while 10% exceeded 70%. For room temperature, 26% were within the recommended range, while 51% recorded temperatures above 26°C. The survey also assessed lighting and indoor CO₂ levels. For illuminance, 49% of rooms were within the specified range, while 36% were underlit. Meanwhile, only 5% of rooms recorded CO₂ levels above 1,000 ppm, with most rooms recording lower concentrations.

The RDS findings provide valuable information to support FTKEK in improving indoor comfort, building performance and energy management, contributing towards a healthier and more sustainable faculty environment.

FTKEK Energy Consumption Trends and Performance (2023 - 2026)

Overall Energy Consumption Trend

Energy consumption at the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology (FTKEK) shows a changing pattern from 2023 to 2026. Annual electricity consumption increased from 1,214,410.50 kWh in 2023 to 1,243,276.50 kWh in 2024, and further to 1,309,155.31 kWh in 2025. For 2026, the available data from January to June recorded 663,270.25 kWh. Monthly consumption during this period ranged from 89,815.52 kWh in February to 154,559.75 kWh in April.

Higher Energy Use in the First Half of 2026

The first six months of 2026 recorded the highest January–June consumption among the years compared, representing an increase of approximately 23.8% compared with the same period in 2025. The increase was particularly noticeable in April and June 2026, where consumption rose by approximately 67% and 33%, respectively, compared with the same months in 2025. The data also indicates that energy consumption had already started increasing towards the end of 2025.

Possible Factors Affecting Energy Consumption

Several operational and environmental factors may have contributed to the higher electricity demand. FTKEK experienced a significant increase in undergraduate student numbers beginning in Semester 1 of the 2025/2026 academic session. Higher building occupancy  increase the use of classrooms, laboratories, lighting, equipment and air-conditioning systems.  The period between January–June 2026, due to La Nina phenomenon, with hot and dry weather conditions, which may have increased cooling and air-conditioning requirements.

Impact on Electricity Cost

The increase in electricity consumption was accompanied by a significant rise in energy expenditure. From January to June 2026, FTKEK recorded an electricity cost of approximately RM457,929, compared with RM281,313 for the corresponding 2025 data, an increase of about 62.8%. Monthly costs in 2026 ranged from RM65,956 in January to a high of RM93,908 in March. This highlights the importance of managing not only electricity consumption but also the financial impact of energy use.

Building Energy Performance

FTKEK also monitors its Building Energy Index (BEI), which represents the amount of energy consumed per square metre of building floor area over a year. The BEI provides a useful indicator for comparing building energy performance between years. However, the 2026 BEI should be interpreted carefully because the current figure represents only data up to June 2026 rather than a complete year.

Energy Efficiency and Carbon Emissions

Further analysis using Load Factor (LF), Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) and CO₂ emissions provides additional insight into FTKEK's energy performance. The report indicates that higher load factors are generally associated with higher SEER values, reflecting more efficient operation, while higher electricity consumption also results in increased CO₂ emissions. For example, August 2025 recorded the highest listed load factor of 0.60, SEER of 9.42, and CO₂ emissions of 135.22 tonnes. These indicators support FTKEK's continued efforts to monitor energy efficiency, control operating costs and reduce the environmental impact of its facilities.

FTKEK Continues to Shine with 4-Diamond Recognition at LCC2030 Challenge

Fakulti Teknologi dan Kejuruteraan Elektronik dan Komputer (FTKEK), UTeM, continues to excel by maintaining its 4-Diamond Rating Award under the Low Carbon Cities 2030 Challenge (LCC2030C) 2025.

The recognition was presented during the Low Carbon Cities Award Ceremony 2025, held at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur on 12 February 2026.

LCC 2030 Challenge Programme 2024

FTKEK Achieves 4-Diamond Recognition in Low Carbon City 2030 Challenge 2024

Melaka, 26 February 2025 – The Faculty of Electronic and Computer Technology Engineering (FTKEK), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), has been awarded the Diamond Recognition Award in the Low Carbon City 2030 Challenge (LCC 2030 Challenge) Programme 2024.

The award was presented during the Majlis Anugerah Bandar Rendah Karbon 2024, officiated by YB. Nik Nazmi bin Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, at Sofitel Hotel Kuala Lumpur Damansara. This recognition was achieved through a strategic partnership with Majlis Perbandaran Hang Tuah Jaya, Melaka, reflecting FTKEK’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.

Key Achievements

  • 4-DIAMOND Rating – one of the highest recognition levels under LCC 2030 Challenge 2024.
  • Carbon Emission Reduction: 491.17 tCO₂eq (36.82%) since the baseline year 2022.

This milestone is a result of continuous efforts by the Jawatankuasa Pengurusan Tenaga dan Kelestarian FTKEK, together with FTKEK management and the university community, in implementing energy-efficient practices and sustainable initiatives.
